During Hitler's invasion of Poland, the city of Warsaw is devastated by a vicious Nazi bombing campaign. Lamenting the terrible deaths of their animals, zookeepers Jan and Antonina Zabinski resolve to smuggle many fleeing Jews into their empty zoo. With a deplorable Nazi occupation force in their country, Jan works in the resistance movement as Antonina cares for her new guests.
